    Book details

When Henry Forester is shot down during a bombing run over France, the World War II pilot finds himself trapped behind enemy lines. In constant danger of discovery by German soldiers, Henry begins a remarkable journey to freedom. Relying on the kindness of strangers, Henry moves from town to town--traveling by moonlight, never asking questions, or even the names of the people who help him along the way. Each day brings him closer to home, yet every step in enemy territory invites new dangers.

Even as Henry fights for his own life, he quickly grows to realize the peril that surrounds all of the French people, and to admire the courage of the freedom fighters who risk death to protect him. Suspenseful and achingly true, this critically-acclaimed and deeply beloved novel explores the heartbreak of war, the strength of human spirit, and one young man's struggle to protect the things he loves

"It's packed with action, intrigue, and suspense, but this novel celebrates acts of kindness and heroism without glorifying war." Booklist" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review Text

I have literally just finished reading this book. I am a student in year 11, and found myself sneaking it out in lessons to read instead of work! The descriptions are wonderful, and from the first or second chapter you are hooked. This novel tells the story of a young pilot in the second world war, called Henry. His plane is shot down and he is lost, not knowing whether he is in France, Switzerland or Nazi Germany. As the story unravels it portays beautifully the troubles he faces.I read this book very swiftly, and the only thing i regret is not savouring it, as i wonder if the next book on the list will match current expectations!!BREATHTAKING NOVEL BASED ON TRUE STORY!

I thought that Up On Cloud Nine by Anne Fine was my favourite book, and that's saying something, until I read this one. I got it out of my local library at least 3 times before getting round to reading it, and now I see why my mind told me to - this book is fantastic. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and every emotion in between. I learnt a lot about the French Resistance, and enjoyed the parts where French and German were spoken. I think about this book at least once every day, and I still wonder what happened to the little french boy who was given to the monks to look after when Henry had to move on.My conclusion: L.M.Elliot is a genius.

What a great book!I am not the fastest of readers but I couldnt put it down I think I read it within a day!I dont know much of the French language so some parts which was written I found difficult to understand, but the author has written the book in such a way that you understand what is going on. Henry seemed to go through such hard times that you felt you wanted to be there to help him and show him the way. There was so much detail especially when he was in the barn looking out of the small window and the young boy helping him you can picture the buildings and the boy and his mother. It made you laugh and cry especially the final chapter!
